What is Aider?
Aider is an open-source, artificial intelligence-based command-line programming tool (CLI). Launched in 2023 by Paul Gauthier, it allows developers to use modern language models (such as GPT-4o, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, or DeepSeek-V3) directly on their local machines to edit multiple code files, create tests, and document projects, all natively integrated with Git.
How it works
From your local terminal, you start Aider by passing the files you want to modify. You talk to the AI in natural language. Aider analyzes your project's structure and rewrites the necessary sections of code directly into your local files. Once the changes are successfully made, Aider automatically creates a Git commit with an appropriate descriptive message describing the exact change made.
Key features
- Multi-File Editing: Capable of understanding code dependencies and editing multiple files simultaneously in a coordinated manner.
- Automatic Git Integration: Automatically creates and runs local commits shortly after finishing successful code editing.
- Support for Leading Models: Works with APIs from OpenAI (GPT-4o), Anthropic (Claude 3.5 Sonnet), Google Gemini, and also with local models running via Ollama.
- Code Map: Sends a simplified structure of your entire repository to the AI to provide context without overloading the context window with excess tokens.
Who is it for
- Experienced Developers who prefer to work via the command line or terminal, optimizing their workflow without taking their hands off the keyboard.
- Programmers working with Git-based projects who value automated commits and quick modifications.
- Software Engineers interested in testing different cutting-edge language models on their local code.

Pros and cons
Pros:
- Fantastic integration with Git that saves staging and commit writing time.
- Smart repository mapping provides excellent context for the AI.
- Total flexibility to choose which LLM provider to use.
Cons:
- Initial learning curve due to running entirely via terminal.
- Requires configured external API keys and active credits with providers like OpenAI or Anthropic.
Alternatives to Aider
If you are looking for programming assistants integrated with direct file editing in the repository, the main alternatives are Cursor Composer, Copilot CLI, Cline (VS Code Extension), and GPT Pilot.
