What is Coursera Coach?
Coursera Coach is the smart tutoring assistant powered by generative artificial intelligence integrated natively into the Coursera online education platform. It acts as a 24/7 private study tutor available directly on the course playback screen. Coursera Coach helps students understand difficult topics discussed in lectures by professors from the world's top universities (such as Stanford, Yale, and Google), generating lecture summaries, explaining technical jargon, and creating personalized practice tests.
How it works
When watching a video lecture or reading an article within the Coursera platform, the student can click on the Coach icon in the sidebar. The AI system has full access to the exact transcript of the current video lecture, reading materials, and the professor's slides. The student can ask conceptual questions in natural language (e.g., "What did the professor mean by this algorithm at minute 4:15?"). The Coach answers instantly using the current video's context to formulate the explanation and suggests simple analogies.
Key features
- On-Demand Lesson Summaries: Instant generation of structured summary notes from long lecture videos.
- Jargon Explanation: Helps clarify complex science, programming, or social science terms presented during the course.
- AI-Generated Practice Tests: Automatic creation of quizzes based on the lesson to test the student's retention before taking official assessments.
- Concept Translation: Real-time translation of lecture snippets and technical terms into Portuguese or other languages preferred by the user.

Cons:
- The AI tutor is not enabled in all courses across Coursera's vast catalog (initially focused on popular technology and business courses).
