What is Khroma?

Khroma (Khroma.co) is a creative tool based on artificial intelligence founded in 2018 by designer George Hastings. Created specifically for UI/UX designers, front-end developers, and digital artists, the platform works as an intelligent color recommendation engine that learns the user's personal tastes to generate infinite options of harmonized palettes, typographic combinations, and gradients.

How it works

When accessing the platform for the first time, the user is invited to train the platform's local neural network algorithm. To do this, the user selects 50 colors from a large visual grid that they find aesthetically pleasing. Khroma's AI analyzes the hue, saturation, value, and contrast data of these choices to build a personalized mathematical model of the user's preferences. From this model, Khroma generates thousands of color combinations organized into five different visual formats (Text, Poster, Gradient, Image, and Palette), allowing filtering of results by warm, cool, or specific hex values.

Key features

  • Personalized AI Training: Algorithm that actually learns your color preferences to avoid generic suggestions.
  • Text and Background Preview (Type View): Displays color combinations applied directly to real typographic text and background layouts, assessing visual contrast.
  • Aesthetic Gradient Generator: Creation of smooth color transitions in CSS format ready to copy and paste into web projects.
  • Four-Color Palettes (Palettes): Generation of complex color palettes ideal for brand style guides (branding).
  • Search by Parameters: Advanced filters to search for combinations containing specific tones, opacity ranges, or RGB/Hex values.

Available integrations

Khroma runs directly in the browser as a free SaaS tool. The generated colors are displayed with their respective hexadecimal color codes, RGB color values, and reading accessibility data, ready to be copied to software like Figma, Adobe XD, Sketch, Photoshop or CSS code files.

Who it is for

  • UI/UX Designers seeking to find color combinations that meet web contrast and legibility requirements.
  • Branding and visual identity professionals who need to create exclusive palettes for new brands or corporate projects.
  • Front-End Developers who want to find modern gradient ideas quickly.

Real-world use cases

  1. Defining Visual Identity: A brand designer selects the 50 initial colors and uses Khroma to extract a harmonious 4-color palette in blue and green tones to apply to a biotech startup's branding.
  2. Typographic Contrast Validation: An interface designer uses Khroma's "Type" view to check if a yellow font has enough contrast over a dark gray background before programming the page's CSS.
