What is E2B?
E2B (short for English to Bash) is an open-source computing infrastructure designed for autonomous artificial intelligence agents. The platform provides secure, isolated code sandboxes (microVMs based on Firecracker) that allow language models (LLMs) to run code reliably in the cloud in real time — similar to how Code Interpreter works inside ChatGPT, but customizable for software developers building their own agent tools.
How it works
When developing an AI agent (such as an autonomous programmer), the developer uses E2B's SDK (Node.js or Python). When the AI agent decides to create or test code, E2B starts an isolated microVM in milliseconds. The AI runs programming code, installs dependencies, and performs tests within this protected environment. The agent can interact with files, read data from databases, or start test servers in isolation, without risking the developer's or user's system and infrastructure.
Key features
- Secure High-Speed Sandboxes: MicroVMs started in less than 150ms that isolate untrusted code execution by AI agents.
- SDK for Python and JavaScript: Easy native management of AI development container lifecycles.
- Full Command Line Support: The AI agent can run bash commands, set up databases, and compile packages.
- Session Persistence: Ability to pause and resume agent coding sessions while keeping the file and terminal state.
Available integrations
E2B connects and works with key AI agent ecosystems on the market:
- Agent development frameworks: LangChain, CrewAI, AutoGen, LlamaIndex.
- Enterprise cloud platforms and language models.
Who it is for
- Software Developers and AI Engineers building autonomous programming agents, data analysis assistants, or tools that rely on writing and compiling code.
- Technology Companies needing to provide secure code analysis and execution tools to their users in the cloud.
- AI Researchers studying the behavior and safety of language models running autonomous scripts.
Pricing
| Plan | Price | What is included |
|---|---|---|
| Free Developer | Free | Up to 100 active sandbox hours per month, basic request rate limits |
| Pro | Pay-as-you-go | From $0.05 per active sandbox hour, prioritized support, and elevated limits |
| Custom Enterprise | Upon request | Sandboxes running on private or dedicated servers, enhanced data security, and priority support |
Pros and cons
Pros:
- Ultra-fast microVM startup (under 200ms) essential for agent agility.
- Strict data security standard that isolates malicious code accidentally generated by the AI.
- Very well-documented SDKs integrated with popular agent frameworks.
Cons:
- Requires active development and technical infrastructure; it is not a tool with a ready-made graphical interface for non-programmers.
- Depends on solid knowledge of containers and network control.
Alternatives to E2B
The main alternatives for AI code execution environments are: Docker (manually configured), Kubernetes (for scale), Replit Agent Environment, and Fly.io (used for custom microVMs).
